This whole article is replete with tales of crappy people ops, but what got the biggest from me was "any technical manager should expect to manage at least 20 individual contributors, while also spending at least half their time writing code"

How is it better to spend time/energy/resources to build and embed hardware and disable it by code rather than not ? A way to force consumption :"it's built now, if you don't want to use () for it, it's a form of waste but hey, your dilemma now."
